Doctor Zhivago

Sandwiched between Lawrence Of Arabia (1962) and Ryan's Daughter (1970), David Lean gives an epic scope to Boris Pasternak's Revolutionary Russian romance, starring Lawrence's Omar Sharif as the romantic poet caught up in a love affair with Julie Christie's enchanting Lara. Lean's work has been reinvigorated by DVD, his stunning winter settings crisp in the glorious anamorphic transfer. While never quite as impressive as Lawrence, Zhivago is still vintage Lean and no one does epic better.
