Only Stanley Kubrick could recreate the horrors of Vietnam... in '80s Beckton, London's Docklands. Split between horrifying basic training and awful active duty, the title refers to the ammunition payload used by the film's marines. The first half is propelled by the tongue-lashings dished out by former real-life US Marine drill instructor R Lee Ermey, originally a consultant before Stan the Man recognised his genius for hurling abusive epithets. Matthew Modine stars as Joker, who witnesses the mental persecution of an overweight recruit whose descent into madness climaxes the first half. Then we're deep into the jungle (in Beckton) as Joker becomes a combat correspondent and his fellow Jarheads Animal Mother (Adam Baldwin) and Cowboy (Arliss Howard) engage in intense, bloody combat. Unflinching and hard-hitting, this is everything you'd expect from Kubrick.
