Limelight

Somewhat surprisingly, 1952’s 'Limelight' managed to win an Oscar for Original Dramatic Score at the Academy Award ceremony of 1973. The gap was caused by the film’s delayed release; it didn’t hit US cinemas until 1972, and was thus still eligible for nomination (the Academy have since tightened their guidelines). One thing is certain, however - whether you watch it in 1952, 1973 or 2008, 'Limelight' is an extraordinary film.

Written, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin - now in his 60s - the story focuses on an elderly entertainer who tries to convince Claire Bloom’s suicidal young ballet dancer that life is worth living. Chaplin shines in one of his final roles, as does his co-star Buster Keaton - the scene in which they perform together is pure Hollywood gold. 'Limelight' is a sad, yet uplifting, comedy drama that provides one of cinema’s greatest stars with a fitting send-off.
