A big favourite in its day, especially with housewives who'd trot along to matinees, this sentimental drama concerns four sisters growing up in pre-Civil War America. Of course the four of them have all sorts of romantic entanglements with men, and there are tears to be shed.
Katharine Hepburn excels in her tomboyish role and was rocketed to fame because of it. The story has been shot many times since, most notably in 1949 with Elizabeth Taylor and in 1994 with Winona Ryder, but this version remains the most charming.
