Nico (aka Above the Law)

High-kicking hard man Steven Seagal stars as hotshot Chicago cop Nico in this late '80s beat-'em-up. With family in the Mafia, covert CIA training undertaken in 'Nam and a black belt in Aikido, he's the kind of police officer any right-minded criminal would want to avoid. However, logic is not this film's strong point and dopey ne'er-do-wells seem happy to take him on with alarming regularity.

After busting drug dealers who are subsequently released, Nico soon uncovers an international criminal network masterminded by corrupt CIA operatives and a plot to assassinate a Senator who has been asking too many questions. Guess it's time for Nico to put a stop to their party then.

As Seagal's first film - and the one that can be credited with giving him his tough guy credentials, Nico features all the slick pony tails, silly one-liners and criminals-being-taught-a-lesson fight scenes that you would expect - and set the template for a raft of action man films in the process. A guilty pleasure for any fan of high-octane, low-probability action thrillers.
