Beautiful, aloof Newport heiress Tracy Lord (Kelly) is about to marry bland businessman George Kittredge (John Lund) but matters become complicated when her ex-husband C K Dexter-Haven (Crosby) moves to her neighbourhood determined to win back her hand. Things go from bad to worse for Tracy when journalist Mike Connor (Sinatra) arrives to cover the wedding for Spy Magazine. When Tracy is forced to choose between her suitors, will she realise that "safe" doesn't always mean the best bet?
Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm, John Lund, Louis Calhern & Louis Armstrong
Grace Kelly, who at the time was recently engaged to Prince Rainier of Monaco, wore her actual engagement ring for as character's engagement ring. "High Society" was Princess Grace's last feature film before retiring from acting. The elaborate necklace that Caroline holds up and says "This stinks!" was a prop from Marie Antoinette (1938) starring Norma Shearer. The necklace was later worn by Tracy when greeting Mike and Liz. Elizabeth Taylor was the first choice for the part of Tracy Lord. She was unavailable so the part went to Grace Kelly.
Mike: She's a lovely girl. Tracy: Yes, isn't she? Ah, but we're afraid she has a homicidal streak. Louis Armstrong: What goes on around here? There's a dark horse in this here race and my boy's running a slow third.
